Getting Hot and Bothered with the District 10 Candidates

San Francisco Chronicle Culture Blog 8.25.2010

On the hottest day of the year, I headed out to Bayview-Hunter's Point for last night's "meet and greet" with District 10's Supervisorial candidates. The event, put on by the Concerned Citizens for the Southeast Sector, was held at Velma's Jazz Club, where I had never been but where I shall return.

Why has no one told me about Velma's? It's wonderful.  READ MORE

Supes forum Highlights AIDS issues

Bay Area Reporter, 7.29.2010

Chris Jackson, a straight black man who is on the city's community college board, criticized what he sees as a "lack of political will" to combat HIV issues within communities of color, especially in D10's Bayview and Hunter's Point neighborhoods.

He bemoaned the lack of community health clinics located in the city's eastern neighborhoods and called on developers of the mega housing project at the old navy shipyard to build a health care center.

"People have to travel across the city to get care," said Jackson. "We have been studying it for too long. We need action. We need a health clinic."

"We need to create careers in San Francisco," said Jackson.. READ MORE

Political Juggernaut

San Francisco Bay Guardian, 6.01.2010

Jackson, who was elected to the Community College Board in 2008 and recently jumped into the District 10 race, wants the city to assert that the project is not a regional housing plan.  "It's a local housing plan for local residents," Jackson asserts. "It's not here to provide housing for Silicon Valley. It's for Bayview-Hunters Point and District 10 residents."  READ MORE

Violence in the Bayview—and Solutions

San Francisco Bay Guardian, 5.25.2010

The outpouring of emotion surrounding the tragic death of Tian Sheng Yu — the elderly Chinese man who was savagely beaten to death by two African Americans — resonates with me. My family has been in the Bayview for more than 40 years, and I know firsthand the pain caused by street violence.  READ MORE

Chris Jackson leaps into the District 10 race

San Francisco Bay Chronicle, 5.11.2010

Community College Board Trustee Chris Jackson has thrown his hat into the District 10 Supervisor race.  The move is guaranteed to upset the already crowded field of candidates in the district. District 10 lies in the city's southeast sector and is home to San Francisco's largest remaining African-American community, and some of its most economically disadvantaged communities and environmentally polluted lands.  READ MORE

Chris Jackson Announces Candidacy

Fog City Journal, 5.4.2010

Community College Board Trustee Chris Jackson announced today his candidacy in the race for District 10 Supervisor.

“I am proud to run to represent the diverse communities of District 10 on the Board of Supervisors,” Jackson, a Progressive, wrote in a statement released to FCJ. “It is a place my family has called home since 1966.
